iPhone Email Account Issues

It has been reported here and here that email accounts stored on the iPhone can exhibit a number of strange issues including:

  • Refusal to accept incoming mail
  • Problems retrieving new mail, with the “Last updated” status message showing an old time
  • iPhone mail not being sent
  • The infamous "This message has not been downloaded from the server" message
  • etc.

The problem could occur with email accounts of any type and is not directly related to or caused by IzyMail.

In many cases, the fix for these issues is drop-dead simple: delete and re-establish the afflicted account using our step-by-step setup instructions.

Power Tips for Power Users

(1) Download all messages

If you want to download all of your Hotmail messages (or transfer them to your Gmail account) and still want to keep a copy on the Hotmail site, follow this procedure for best performance:

  • Make sure you have set the Leave on server option in your email application
  • On the IzyMail Control Panel, set the Messages since listbox to Unlimited.
  • Let your application download all messages. This may take several minutes.

Power tip:

  • When all email has arrived, close your application, return to the IzyMail Control Panel and set the Messages since option back to 14 days.

This simple trick will dramatically accelerate all future POP3 downloads.

(2) Short test messages

Don't be surprised when your short test mail (Subject: test, Body: test) does not arrive at your Hotmail Inbox.

IzyMail does deliver those messages, but Hotmail routinely discards very short mail and does not even show it in your Junk mail folder. A proper test requires a message size of at least 1000 characters.

How do I setup IzyMail?

Registration

IzyMail now requires a free registration before it starts working. Please proceed to the registration page.

eMail profile setup

On Windows PCs, please use the Quick Start wizard on the top right of this page. It will create a mail profile on your computer that Outlook, Outlook Express and many other eMail applications will recognize and import. A detailed documentation of all basic and advanced settings is also available.

If you are using another type of system, a PDA or an application which does not recognize the automatic profile, please consult the documentation of mail settings and create a profile by yourself.

On the right side of this page, you can find step-by-step guides for some of the more common mobile devices and applications. For other applications, please check their documentation, guides or help files.

Why is all my mail (not) moved to the Trash folder?

Some of our customers prefer this behaviour, some prefer the other ... In essence, it is done by your email application and you can control the behaviour through an option setting.

The Quick Start wizard on the top right of this page will create a profile which does not delete downloaded mail. If you create the mail profile yourself, please look for the application option

  • Leave a copy of messages on the server

and set accordingly. The option can usually be found in your email application under

My PDA stalls / Why do I get timeout errors?

3689 messages in your Inbox ??

If your webmail Inbox contains several thousand old messages, the IzyMail login process can slow down to a point where your PDA will give up and not wait for the response to complete. Even if it does not time out, your PDA may not be able to 'digest' such an amount of messages.

The easy solution is to tidy up by moving older messages to a separate (archive) folder. A suggested target size for your Inbox is about 200-500 messages.

XXL messages      (XXXXL, actually ;-))

Check your mailbox for a recent message with a very large attachment, likely with photos or videos. The message is several MByte in size. Your PDA cannot process the attachments in reasonable time and appears to hang.
The exact conditions and size limits vary by device, connection speed, and message content.

There issue is really with your PDA and not with IzyMail. If you can wait long enough, the download and decoding will eventually complete. If you are not that patient, check for options to disable attachment download to your PDA, or remove the XXL message from your Inbox right away.

Outlook and other desktop applications

Similar errors can occur in applications like Outlook, when the server timeout value is too low.

The suggested solution is to increase the server timeout value in your email application. The Quick Start wizard on the top right of this page will create a profile with a 3 minutes timeout value. If you created the mail profile yourself, please look for the application option

  • Server timeouts

and set to 2-4 min. The option can usually be found in your email application under

Tools - E-mail accounts
[More settings ...] and/or [Advanced] settings

What is my username/password?

Your username is always the full email address including the @...com appendix. Example: myaddress@hotmail.com

Please note that some applications (Outlook and others) try to be overly clever. They ask for your email address, strip the @...com part and pre-fill that into the user name field. The application has made a wrong assumption and the change MUST be corrected.

Your password is always the original password of your provider. As an example, for Hotmail accounts, it is the password that you enter at http://www.hotmail.com

Your email address is always the original email address of the mail service. It does not change. The internally assigned alias address helps us to improve the reliability of mail deliveries and is not associated with a mailbox. Please do not use the alias address.

Help me to recover my password

We are very sorry, but we do not know your Hotmail/Yahoo/AOL password and cannot help.
Please contact the original provider of the mailbox for assistance.

What is wrong with sending?

There are several possible reasons and solutions for this problem. The most common ones are included below. Please take the time to check and verify them all.

#1 Account profile

When configuring the account profile, please pay attention to the suggested settings for

  • SMTP authentication (ON)
  • outgoing port (587)
  • All secure encryption options must be OFF

#2 Common typos

Please watch for common typing errors. Such errors happen easily on mobile devices.

  • izymail, com (comma instead of dot)
  • lzymail.com (Lima in place of >India)
  • izzymail.com (double zz)
  • 1zymail.com (1 (one) instead of India)
  • izymal.com (missing i)
  • izymai.com (missing l)

#3 Sender address

To send messages through the IzyMail system, you must use your registered (Hotmail) address as the user name as well as the 'From' address. You cannot send messages 'From' foreign mail addresses.

You may receive a message about an 'Invalid recipient' from your email application. This message can be misleading. It may indicate an incorrectly formatted email address, but it can also mean that you are trying to send under an address other than the registered one.

This restriction is part of our anti-spam policies. Thank you for your understanding.

#4 Port 25 blocked

Another common issue with sending is a provider block on port 25, as indicated by the error message 'Cannot connect to outgoing server'. Network providers who apply such a block include Comcast, MSN, and several others.

The message means that your Internet provider does not allow messages to be sent through other SMTP systems than their own.

The technical term is a block on port 25. Nowadays, and in an attempt to fight spam and virus mail, it has become a common practice of many Internet providers.

Please contact your provider for ways to circumvent this limitation of your Internet connection. The usual advice will be to reconfigure your IzyMail account profile such that it uses your provider's outgoing mail server (SMTP server), possible in combination with their user name/password. Your provider's helpdesk has all the details.

The same limitation may apply when you are on a corporate network or behind a firewall of some sort.

If you would like to understand the reason for this change, please take a look at the FAQ from AOL and other documents.

#5 iPhone-specific issues

It has been reported that messages sent from the Apple iPhone may disappear into the void. This appears to be a problem of the iPhone software and the usual remedy is to remove and re-create the account on the iPhone.

#6 Domains at GoDaddy.com and alike

Mail to domains hosted by GoDaddy.com or any of their resellers may fail. GoDaddy's 'secureserver.net' system appears to be overly restrictive and may reject messages for no apparent reason. The issue has also been reported by other independent sources.

If you experience this problem, please contact GoDaddy.com or the respective domain reseller on the matter.

And the final alternative

If you have an alternate email address with your ISP provider, you can use their outgoing mail server to route your outgoing Hotmail:

Simply copy all the outgoing mail (SMTP) settings from your provider account profile to the IzyMail profile. This would include

  • ISP outgoing server name
  • authentication options
  • ISP user name and password

In effect, you will be asking your provider's outgoing mail server to transport your outgoing Hotmail messages. This is a perfectly legitimate way to route your outgoing mail and you may call you provider's support desk for assistance.

The server does not exist / cannot be found ...

Please check, double-check and triple-check the correct spelling of the server names. Especially on PDAs, Smartphones and Pocket PCs, little typos like izymail, com (comma instead of dot), izzymail.com (double zz), izymal.com (missing i) can happen easily and are often overlooked.

If the problem persists: Some wireless networks don't seem to carry the server names 'izymail.com'. Please contact your ISP or wireless provider and make them aware of this DNS (name resolution) issue. Ask them to update their DNS zone files.

Why do my messages arrive as spam?

Spam filtering is performed at the receiving end and beyond the control of the sender or intermediate service like IzyMail.

All major email providers have anti-spam systems in place. For obvious reasons, the exact filtering rules are never published.

If your messages are falsely classified as spam, please ask the recipient to add your address to his or her list of "Safe Senders".

If you are sending test messages around, please keep in mind that

  • very short messages, e.g. "hi!", "test", "qqqqqq", etc.
  • mail without subject
  • mail from yourself to yourself
  • handcrafted mail, manually injected into Hotmail and others
  • and such ...

are very likely to be discarded by the Hotmail system. They will not even show up as Junk. At times, there is also a noticable delay (several hours) between sending and delivery.

What is this strange email address all about?

IzyMail now applies Sender ID technology to outgoing messages. It improves the likelyhood that the receiving site accepts your legitimate outgoing messages.

In simple words, Sender ID requires to disclose the true origin of an email message in the (invisible) message headers. If the receiving site cannot verify the origin, it may filter, reject or even discard the message altogether.

Most humans will not recognize a change without inspection of the message headers, but some applications may show a different From address. Regardless of that change, we have taken great care to ensure that message replies etc. are routed back to the correct destination.

You may opt out of Sender ID via the IzyMail control panel, but before you do so, you may want to read Microsoft's position on the matter. In our experience, Sender ID is an important factor to ensure delivery to Hotmail, MSN and elsewhere.

Help! I am getting duplicate mails!

The problem is more than likely caused by a confirmed bug in Outlook.

Please check out the Knowledge Base article on the Microsoft site for more explanation and a suggested resolution.

You are advised to install the latest service pack for Office 2003.

How can I uninstall and stop the notifications?

If you create account profiles in your email application and do not register or let the registration expire, IzyMail may occasionally remind you of such useless, leftover or expired profiles.

This includes all profiles which contains the obsolete server name 'pop3hot.com'.

The notification message itself clearly states the origin, the cause and necessary action. Following the simple instructions is the most effective way to remove IzyMail from your computer:

This automated notification is not unsolicited. It is created in response to a download request from your email application and informs you that your computer has actively contacted the IzyMail system and attempted to download messages for your account.

If you do not wish to use IzyMail and wish to stop all notifications immediately, please remove the respective account profile definition from your email application.

The IzyMail support team cannot stop or prohibit connection attempts from applications on your computer and will not answer related requests.

Where is the download?

The vast majority of our customers prefer the download-free, installation-free version of IzyMail that you are currently experiencing.

With the recent upgrade to version 3 and its additional features, the previously available downloads have been withdrawn and are no longer publically available.

If you are an existing customer and have a question regarding a previous version of IzyMail, don't hesitate to send a support ticket.
